Radiochemistry and Radiation Chemistry Lab

Overview

Radiochemistry and Radiation Chemistry Laboratory

The research and service activities deal with chemical aspects within nuclear engineering and technology, with particular attention to:

  • reprocessing of Spent Nuclear Fuel and waste management: partitioning of fission products, lanthanides and actinides by hydro- and pyro-metallurgical processes; nuclear waste confinement
  • decommissioning of industrial/nuclear plants: radiochemical characterization of materials containing artificial and natural radionuclides by α and γ spectrometry, liquid scintillation counting and isotopic/elemental ICP-MS analysis
  • chemical compatibility within Gen IV nuclear fast reactors: theoretical and experimental studies concerning chemical reactivity and thermodynamics in liquid metals and molten salts
  • technological and medical applications of ionizing radiations: radio-resistance, radio-induced modifications and aging of different matrices, innovative chemical dosimeters for industrial and radiotherapy applications.
  • education and training: development of innovative didactical tools and teaching approaches in the fields of nuclear chemistry and radiochemistry.
